Lot Essay

Easily transported and smaller in size, tables of this size and proportion are frequently depicted in woodblock prints used in daily activities, such as for writing, displaying objects, and dining. The elegantly splayed legs, finely carved cloud-form spandrels and attractively grained top elevates the design of this simple form. Wang Shixiang illustrates a wine table of similar proportions and design with cloud-form spandrels in Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture: Ming and Early Qing Dynasties, vol. II, Hong Kong, 1990, p. 77. no B35.
