Lot Essay

Originally only available as part of a set of watches when first offered to Patek Philippe's most important clients, this reference 5077P was launched in 2003 with each watch of the set being made with a different butterfly themed cloisonné dial. The present watch affords collectors the perfect opportunity to obtain an individual piece from one of these exclusive and much sought after sets. Less than 10 examples of the present reference 5077P-015 platinum Calatrava are likely to have been made, each cloisonné enamel dial being unique and hand-made as one of the superb creations of Patek Philippe’s rare handicrafts division. The cloisonné enamel uses a myriad of enamel colours and enamel paint; a minimum of 11 firings and a total of around 45 hours of work. To make each dial, 60 cm of gold wire is required. The platinum case has a diameter of 38 mm. and houses the famous Patek Philippe caliber 240 automatic movement.

Patek Philippe’s rare handicrafts division is dedicated to the preservation of the eclectic artisanal skills that have been associated with horology for over 400 years. The continuing use of these precious techniques in modern watchmaking contributes to their survival whilst at the same time delighting and impressing collectors and connoisseurs. The resplendent watch offered here pays tribute to Patek Philippe’s devotion to keeping these ancient crafts alive and demonstrates the mastery of techniques and subjects that enhance and enrich Patek Philippe’s enduring appeal and reputation for excellence in all aspects of watchmaking.

The wristwatches with rare handicrafts cloisonné enamel dials, always made in very small editions are now eagerly awaited as iconic and highly collectable horological works of art.

Ref.5077 is illustrated in the 'Blue Book 5', 2021 edition by Eric Tortella, pp. 288-291.
