Lot Essay

This aquatint panorama engraved by John Clark is a rare survival. It provides a spectacular continuous view of early 19th century Istanbul. Although the publisher, Samuel Leigh, published a number of such city panoramas, this is the first and only edition of this view of Constantinople. It was issued both coloured and uncoloured. Intriguingly, the panorama also appears to be Pitman's only recorded work as a travelling artist. Noteworthy is the survival of the accompanying quarto pamphlet, Companion to the Panorama of Constantinople (London, 1831). Other copies of this panorama have sold in these Rooms on 27 September 2006, lot 105, 26 April 2012, lot 294, and 13 July 2023, lot 171, and at Sotheby's London, 28 May 2002, lot 933, and 10 November 2009, lot 83, although none were offered with the original quarto pamphlet.
