Lot Essay

Though studies of the pietra dura elements of Mughal architecture were popular in early 19th century India, this example is unusual for being almost life size and for depicting the whole length of the cenotaph. A watercolour of a similar scale, depicting only the upper part of the cenotaph, was sold in these Rooms, 10 April 2014, lot 177.
