Lot Essay

This is a typical example of Palmer's often used 'little long' format (see R. Lister, op.cit, p. 6). In both material and execution, this idealised landscape reflects both the artist's dramatic Shoreham period idyllic landscapes, and his subsequent romantic Italianate works. Stylistically we can see Shoreham reflected in the handling of the trees, whilst his trips to Devon, and then through the Continent, influence other areas of the composition, notably the robust mountain range in the distance (an analogy for the Alps).
