These distinctive wall-lights (along with those in lot 55), with brightly painted enamels imitating porcelain, are typical of the work of Viennese enamellers of the 1750s and 1760s, and relate to a series of chandeliers and wall-lights supplied to the celebrated 'East Asian' cabinets at Schönbrunn, which have been associated with the Viennese enameller Christoph von Jünger (1736-1777). A closely related pair of wall-lights is in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, formerly in the Lesley and Emma Sheafer collection (acc. no. 1974.356.173.174).
