Lot Essay

The depiction of squirrels with trailing vines often serves as a visual rebus symbolizing a wish for numerous sons and the continuation of the family lineage, with the winding vines representing the family’s enduring legacy. Additionally, this motif has been interpreted as conveying aspirations for promotion to a higher rank.
A comparable bowl can be found in the Palace Museum Collection, Beijing, as illustrated in Chen Runmin's Qing Shunzhi Kangxi chao qinghua ci (Qing Dynasty Blue and White Porcelains of the Shunzhi and Kangxi Periods), Beijing, 2005, pl. 120. Another bowl with a similar pattern and a Kangxi reign mark, from the Grandidier Collection in the Musée Guimet, Paris, is featured in Oriental Ceramics, The World's Greatest Collections, Tokyo, 1981, vol. 7, pl. 108.
