Antefixes are the decorative elements found at the ends of tubular roof tiles in ancient Chinese architecture. Within the small space of these tile heads, Chinese craftsmen crafted a rich and vibrant artistic expression, contributing to a unique cultural and artistic heritage. Han Dynasty antefixes evolved from those of the Qin Dynasty, with the Han examples being not only more numerous but also more varied. Production during the Han period became more standardized, resulting in orderly and refined patterns.
A closely related pottery antefix, featuring the same shape and stylized face, can be found in the collection of the Musée Cernuschi in Paris (Collection No. M.C. 6768).
