Property from a Private European Collection (Lots 113-119)Christie’s is honoured to offer this collection of Chinese and Korean textiles in Art d’Asie and Art of Asia online this December. The current owner built the collection over the last thirty years, forming close relationships with specialists within the field along the way. Most of the textiles were acquired from the major international auction houses in London, Paris and New York including Christie’s and Sotheby’s. A selection was also included by the Finnish Museum of Theatre, Helsinki, in the exhibition “The Story of the Chinese Theatre”, 20 October 1997 – 9 February 1998.

Lot Essay

The double crane was the insignia of civil servants of the first three ranks. Twin crane Korean badges dated to the same period can be found in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, accession number: 53.60.9 and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, no. 1848A-1888.
