Claude Debussy (1862-1918)
Autograph manuscript, Fugue in F minor, [Paris, 1883]
Title ('Fugue' in blue crayon), notated in black ink on five systems of four staves, a few pencil markings by another hand, five pages, 350 x 270mm, pp.1-4 on the facing inner pages of bifolia, the paper by Lard, rue Feydeau, Paris. Stitched in a modern leather-backed binding.
A prize composition for the 1883 Prix de Rome. The fugue is on a theme by Massenet: it was submitted for the preliminary 'concours d'essai' of the Prix de Rome. The pencil annotations may be by Debussy's composition teacher, Ernest Guiraud (1837-1892). This was Debussy's second attempt at the Prix de Rome, which he was to win in the following year with L'Enfant Prodigue.
