Niccolò Paganini (1782-1840)
Autograph manuscript, 'Var. 1mo', the accompaniment to the first variation of the work 'La tempesta' for violin and orchestra, [Vienna, 13 July 1828]
In three systems of four staves, with an additional single stave at the end, two pages, 242 x 336mm, a single line of music only notated in each system, with the exception of ten bars entered in two to four staves, some indications of instrumentation ('Violoncello solo ... Tutti'), date and authentication ('Paganini's Handschrift') at the end signed by Joseph Panny.

Paganini on his wildly-successful first foreign tour. 'La tempesta' was composed in collaboration with the Viennese composer and violinist Joseph Panny (1796-1828), and first performed at the Redoutensaal on 24 July 1828 in the presence of the emperor: this was Paganini's farewell concert at the end of a three-month stay in Vienna, during which the acclaim accorded to his virtuoso performances laid the foundation for the enduring Paganini legend.
