Donald Claflin (1935-1979) was an American jewelry designer known for his imaginative and whimsical creations. From 1965 to 1977, Claflin designed for Tiffany & Co., where he produced a range of distinctive creations with quirky motifs and lively designs.

In 1967, he invented a notable series of brooches inspired by Peruvian figures. Using materials like finely carved coral, turquoise and brightly polished gold, Claflin brought to life the postures and attires of pre-Columbian Peruvian figures. His works captured the spirit of the traditional motifs while integrating his own playful, unique style.

The present lot was one of six brooches illustrated in Tiffany & Co.’s 1967-1968 Blue Book., each inspired by an ancient Peruvian figure.
