Lot Essay

The composition of the Virgin and Child, seated and holding a flower, is based on a similar panel by Bernard van Orley, from his Seven Joys of Mary, now in the Galleria Colonna, Rome. The present composition shows the figural group in reverse, as does another panel of unknown authorship, now in the Worcester Art Museum, MA (inv. no. 1918,185).
