Lot Essay

Sometime after this painting was sold in 1970, it underwent a transformative cleaning which removed overpaint in the upper left quadrant. This revealed the twigs with berries at upper left, as well as the original arrangement of the figs in the basket.

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer for endorsing the attribution on the basis of photographs (private communication, 22 October 2024).
