Lot Essay

First published by Benno Geiger in 1949, this painting was previously believed to be a self-portrait of the Genovese artist Alessandro Magnasco, called Lisandrino (loc cit.). At that time, the reverse of the panel was inscribed: 'Ritratto del Lisandrino pinto da lui stesso' ('Portrait of Lissandro painted by himself', loc. cit.). In her 1977 catalogue, Fausta Franchini Guelfi found the attribution to be untenable, it was again later rejected by Laura Muti and Daniele de Sarno Prignano (loc cit.).
