Lot Essay
The C.K. Buckley was built in 1890 by John Winslow of Brooklyn, New York. On the day of her launch into Gowanus Canal, she was described as “the handsomest looking tugboat in the bay” and recognized for her impressive size. The C.K. Buckley had a crew of seven and its home port was New York. The present lot depicts two crewmembers in action at the stern as together they handle the hawser.
Charles K. Buckley (1846 – 1929) was a longtime resident of Brooklyn, New York. He was born in Dublin, Ireland and immigrated to the U.S. as a teenager. In 1861, Buckley enlisted in the Thirteenth Regiment and later the G.A.R Post No. 327 of Brooklyn, NY. Buckley became a prominent figure in the lumber business after the war. He was the Vice President and Treasurer of the South Brooklyn Saw Mill Company, which merged with a number of lumber companies in 1891 to form Yellow Pine Company, where Buckley served as President.
