Lot Essay

This work depicts the HMS Mediator captained by James Luttrell successfully capturing two ships in an American and French convoy off the coast of Spain on December 11-12, 1782. A leading marine painter and engraver of the late eighteenth century, Robert Dodd (1748-1816) exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1782 to 1809.
