Lot Essay

The present lot is a captivating scene of a whale hunt amidst turbulent waters. As the sailors close in and strike, the whale attempts to fight off its predator. While the boats struggle in the violent conditions, the courageous sailors brave on in bloody waters.

Frederick Stiles Jewett was born in Simsbury, Connecticut and had worked in the whaling industry. Best known for his whaling scenes, Jewett only painted in the last seven years of his life.
