Lot Essay

The vignette of Venus standing on the clam shell engraved on the tankard’s cover echoes the figure of Venus centering a 1520-61 design for a dagger sheath by German engraver and medalist Jacob Binck (c. 1500-1569) in The Elisha Whittelsey Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (obj. no. 56.500.20).
