Lot Essay

Nuremburg goldsmith Nicolaus Hieronymus Höfler (1660-1738) trained as an apprentice under his father Johann Philipp Höfler before becoming a master in 1682 (K. Tebbe, Nürnberger Goldschmiedekunst 1541-1868, Nuremberg, 2007, no. 367, pp. 177-178). Höfler served as Ratsherr des Handwerks, the highest office available in the goldsmith trade at the time, from 1724 until his death in 1738. Another clear cut-glass bottle with silver mounts, mark of Elias Adam, Augsburg, circa 1710, was sold Christie's, Amsterdam, 4 April 2007, lot 643.
