Lot Essay

Born in New York City, Francis Silva first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1868. In the 1870s, he traveled throughout New England seeking inspiration along the coast, including Massachusetts and Rhode Island, while also painting scenes along the Hudson River. Silva moved to Long Branch, New Jersey in 1880. While he also maintained a studio in New York City's Tenth Street Studio Building, he focused on scenes along the Jersey coastline, such as the present work, for the remainder of his career.
