Lot Essay

Gilbert Gaul was born in New Jersey in 1855 and studied under John George Brown at the National Academy of Design in New York before further training at the Art Students League. Over the course of his career, Gaul primarily split his time between New York and Tennessee, before returning to New Jersey for the last decade of his life. In addition to his notable landscape paintings, Gaul was known for his work as an illustrator, featured in publications including Cosmopolitan and Century Magazine. Gaul's work is now included in the collections of the High Museum of Art, Atlanta Georgia, and the New-York Historical Society, among others.
