Lot Essay

Painted in 1901, the present work depicts Newport, Rhode Island, where Hassam spent September and October of that year. The trip resulted in numerous stunning works like the present example, as well as others now in museum collections, including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Art, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
