Lot Essay

Puan Khequa III was a prominent Chinese merchant and one of the leading figures in the co-hong, the guild of Chinese merchants in Canton. He played a significant role in facilitating trade between China and Western nations, particularly during the period of 1821-1843. For another portrait of this eminent merchant, see Patrick Conner, Paintings of the China Trade, The Sze Yuan Tang Collection of Historic Paintings, Hong Kong, 2013, p. 152, no. 136.
