CROWLEY Alesteir (1875-1947)
Household Gods. Pallanza: privately printed [but probably London: Chiswick Press], 1912.
Author's own personal 'library copy' of the first edition of his one-act play, inscribed thus on front free endpaper. Household Gods reflects the cultural shifts of early 20th-century Europe, a growing rejection of Victorian moral conventions, and the embrace of avant-garde expression. Blending comedy with philosophical allegory, the work explores the tension between materialism and transcendence, embodying Crowley’s engagement with esoteric movements and his broader rejection of conventional morality.
Quarto (190 x 145mm). Half-title (endpapers lightly spotted, slight separation of gatherings between pp. 16-17, faint finger soiling to title). Original cloth, spine lettered in gilt (light scattered spotting on front cover, spine slightly darkened, extremities faintly rubbed); contained in morocco-backed slipcase. Provenance: authorial inscription on front free endpaper.
