LEWIS, Matthew Gregory (1775-1818)
The Monk: a Romance. London: for J. Bell, 1796.
First edition, first issue, of a landmark novel in the history of Gothic literature: presentation copy inscribed by the author: ‘From M. G. Lewis to the Marquis of Lorne March 15th 1804’. The Monk introduced elements of supernatural horror, violence, and eroticism that became defining features of the Gothic genre, paving the way for future Gothic novels and significantly influencing the development of modern horror. Rothschild 1327.

3 volumes, 12mo (174 x 104mm). Titles with horizontal chain lines (occasional scattered staining and soiling, some small marginal chips and closed tears, some quires sprung, the title to vol. III possibly restored to blank upper margin.) Contemporary red straight-grained leather over blue marbled paper boards (boards and extremities a little rubbed); modern red morocco-backed box. Provenance: Field Marshal John Campbell, 5th Duke of Argyll (1723–1806; presentation inscription by the author to ‘the Marquis of Lorne’ on front endpaper).
