Lot Essay

Jacques-Emile Blanche was a French artist, and friend of Degas, Manet and Renoir. He made frequent visits to London and befriended Conder in Paris in 1895. Blanche also painted a celebrated portrait of Conder in 1904 (Tate Britain, London, see J-E. Blanche, Portraits of a Lifetime, London, 1937, illustrated facing p. 84).
