Lot Essay

The subject of the present work appears to be one of the Three Witches from Shakespeare's Macbeth.

Doré inteded to make a large scale illustration of Shakespeare's Macbeth as the crowning of his career. This work was to include 1000 drawings, which he considered "not one too many for a subject so vast" (Letter to his publisher, Cassel). Unfortunately, such an endevour was never completed, but first drafts do remain including a few unreleased woodcuts and drawings.
