Lot Essay

This portrait of a bearded man in a reflective pose with downcast eyes is close to the many portraits of monks Federico captured at the abbey at Vallombrosa. The features of the man recall those of the artist’s father, Ottaviano Zuccaro, as depicted in a drawing in Stockholm (inv. NM 493⁄1863; P. Bjurström and B. Magnusson, Italian Drawings. Umbria, Rome, Naples, Stockholm, 1998, no. 591, ill.).

James Mundy has confirmed the attribution of the drawing to Federico Zuccaro and will include this work in his forthcoming monograph on the artist.
