Together with portraits of specific sitters, Piazzetta made numerous studies of character heads (Teste di carattere), which are not portraits of specific individuals. Piazzetta was able to combine black and white chalk to render the essential elements of the model’s features and clothing with great liveliness.

Andrew Robison, after studying the drawing in person, confirmed the attribution and suggested dating it 1740⁄1745. The scholar noted that a later artist made a few retouches in black chalk, mainly in the hair and drapery, and more extensive rework of the heightening using white gouache.
