Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo drew several series of drawings which repeat the same theme in many different inventive variations. The present sheet is part of the series representing God the Father in the clouds supported by angels and cherubs.

According to the old numbering, which often appears near the top left corner of the sheets, there were over one hundred drawings in this series (J. Byam Shaw, The Drawings of Domenico Tiepolo, London, 1962, p. 32). Many drawings on this theme are in the Museo Correr in Venice and a group of thirteen are in Stuttgart (Tiepolo. Giambattista, Domenico and Lorenzo Tiepolo from the Graphische Sammlung Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, from Private Collections in Wuerttemberg and from the Martin von Wagner Museum of the University of Würzburg, exhib. cat., Stuttgart, 1971, pp. 57-62).
