These four drawings were part of an album with costume designs produced for operas performed at the Teatro Reale in Turin. Marini, originally from Piedmont, began to design for the theater in 1769 and was employed by King Amedeo III of Sardinia. Tartars featured as characters in the opera Tamas Kouli-Kan nell'India by Italian composer Gaetano Pugnani, performed in the royal theater in 1772.
