This drawing has been attributed to Hubert Robert since it joined the collection of Edmond and Jules de Goncourt, the well-known brothers active as collectors in Paris in the 19th Century. However, the authorship of the sheet has been recently questioned (written communication by Sarah Catala) on the basis of stylistic comparison with works securely ascribed to the artist.
The drawing appears to be the work of a 19th Century artist trying to create a composition in the taste of the Goncourt brothers or in the ‘Goût Goncourt’ (on this topic see S. Catala in Le Dessin dans reserve. Collection du musée des Arts décoratifs, Paris, 2020, p. 120). The drawing is a free reinterpretation of Hubert Robert’s depiction of the gardens of Villa d’Este at Tivoli in a now lost drawing, known through a counterproof in Besançon (inv. vol. 452, no. 34; see S. Catala, Les Hubert Robert de Besançon, Milan, 2013, no. 64, ill.).
