A student of Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet (1792-1845), Théodore Valerio traveled extensively throughout Europe during his career and built his reputation producing ethnographic drawings and prints of the people and costumes he encountered.

The image of the three musicians playing string instruments was translated into print known in several variants. It was also published in 1870 in Le Tour du Monde to illustrate Georges Perrot’s article Souvenirs d'un voyage chez les Slaves du Sud (see Le Tour du Monde. Nouveau Journal des Voyages, first semester, 1870, p. 277). As stated in a note by the editor, the illustrations for the article were taken from a portfolio of unpublished drawings by Valerio, a series of works he had brought back from his trips to eastern Europe in the 1850s.
