This 18th-century moon flask was inspired by small group of exquisitely potted blue and white moon flasks made during the Yongle and Xuande periods. The Ming prototypes were in turn inspired by Islamic metalwork glass models.

The large geometric design on either side of this vessel, with central yin-yang medallion, is an adaption of a design found on Xuande-period examples that have a similar central medallion enclosed by thinner petal motifs than those found on the present moon flask. For a Xuande-period example in the British Museum, see J. Harrison-Hall, Catalogue of Late Yuan and Ming Ceramics in the British Museum, London, 2001, p. 110, no. 3:21.
