A brass nocturnal,
unsigned, the plate with calendar scale, the months divided 10-20-30, 10-20-31 and 10-20-28 (Feb), the volvelle with index pointer and twenty-four hour scale, with sub-divisions, engraved MEDIA NOX, the index arm engraved HOROLOGIUM NOCTURNUM, with pierced handle, the reverse with inset for a volvelle (possibly never fitted), the instrument constructed from two plates soldered together, provenance unknown, possibly Italian, 18th-Century -- 3 3/8in. (8.6cm.) dia.
