Lot Essay

Leon Gaspard and his wife traveled throughout northern Africa from 1932-33, visiting Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. The present work reflects the artist's fascination with the bustling markets that he saw on his travels. Complete with boldly colored textiles and frenzied shoppers, Gaspard expertly heightens the scene's sense of excitement with his signature painterly brushwork.
