"Tigers have fascinated me ever since my boyhood. For me, a tabby in the yard was a tiger in the Jungle. The harmony of the tiger's orange-ocher fur with black stripes was beautiful beyond belief to me. In those days, my father's artist friends were impressed that I drew big cats without reference material. Whenever I see some of those old drawings, I remember his friends saying that my cats had "real character." I still feel as I used to whenever I see Rembrandt Bugatti's sculptures of big cats.
Observing big cats in the wild is fascinating, but zoos and game farms have provided my best opportunities to study them closely. It was while observing a lioness at the Calgary Zoo that I was struck by her eyes which made an unforgettable impression in my mind which I wanted to convey in Tall Grass Tiger, my first big painting of a Tiger.
Tigers cover a lot of ground through tall grass areas, and it is not too difficult to imagine a close encounter. The hyperrealistic rendering of the grasses in front of the main subject gives the painting more drama, making an interesting foreground and creating more depth.
The most beautiful of all cats, the tiger has a very bleak future. If they continue to use tiger bones in medicine, the species will disappear from the wild scene within the next decade."
