Each clasp of barbed quatrefoil form, centring a large cabochon mecca stone within a rose-cut diamond-set rim, in an openwork rose-cut diamond-set gold mount (Russian marks for St Petersburg), with a hook and loop on each clasp, maker’s mark (August Holmström), St Petersburg, 1899-1903

Cabochon chalcedony stones of purple-blue or mauve colour are described in Fabergé’s ledgers as ‘mecca stones’. This name apparently derives from Mocha, a town on the Red Sea coast of Yemen, where these stones were mined.
