The finials embossed with foliage and flowers on a textured ground, the corners applied with angel-capped brackets, the tubular stems engraved with foliage and with a gilt terminal and a wood core, apparently unmarked

Lot Essay

A pair of comparable lanterns are in a private collection and illustrated in Taullard, Plateria Sudamericana, 1942, fig. 198 and El Arte Luso Brasileño en el Rio de la Plata, exhibition cat., Buenos Aires, 1966, no. 30.
One of another pair, also unmarked and attributed to Rio de Janeiro, is illustrated in P.M. Bardi, Arte da Prata no Brasil, 1979, p. 65.
