Lot Essay

The present portrait was likely painted in 1778, with a payment made by Lord Vere on 22 November 1781 for 35 guineas. Aubrey Beauclerk succeeded his father as the 2nd Lord Vere Beauclerk on 2 October 1781 and later became the 5th Duke of St. Albans on 16 February 1787, following the death of his cousin, George Beauclerk (1758-1787), 4th Duke of St. Albans, who died unmarried.
