Datable to 1843, the present work is a beautiful example of Jongkind's early Romantic style. The artist had received his early training from the Romantic artist Andreas Schelfhout, and the older artist's influence can still be felt in the young Jongkind's work. Schelfhout introduced Jongkind to the maritime painter Eugene Isabey, and the two traveled together to Normandy in 1846 before Jongkind settled in Paris in that same year to continue to train under Isabey. An important pioneer of Impressionism, Jongkind's understanding of light and reflection is already evident in his work at this early date.
