Lot Essay

This composition derives from a lost painting by Andrea del Sarto, known as The Barbadori Holy Family, first recorded by Giorgio Vasari in the Florentine collection of Baccio Barbadori. The lost painting, probably a tondo, included figures of Saint Elizabeth and Saint Joseph in addition to those depicted here. A second autograph version by Andrea del Sarto is preserved in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 714), and a variant by Franciabigio is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv. no. 208).
