Consigned by its original owner, the present Santos Dumont is extremely early and features a 'backwards' limited edition engraving reading '90⁄4'.
In honor of the 90th anniversary of the Cartier Santos Dumont model first conceived in 1904 at the request legendary aviator and friend of Louis Cartier, Mr. Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Maison celebrated with very elegant and ultra-thin Santos Dumont with salmon dial, blued steel Breguet hands, and platinum case. Limited to only 90 examples, the manual-winding timepiece is incredibly thin measuring less than a total thickness of 4.5 mm., making the modest sized watch very comfortable and conforming to the wrist.
Originally, Mr. Santos-Dumont requested a wristwatch from Louis Cartier as a time-telling device would be much easier to read on his wrist rather than taking out a pocket watch from his jacket while navigating a plane. The Santos remains as Cartier oldest watch design and is one of their most popular watches that is still being manufactured today.
