The present Rolex Submariner date reference 16808 is entirely crafted from 18k gold and features an overall strong case with thick lugs and a matte black 'nipple' dial with an attractive patina. Interestingly and only found in very few reference 16808 watches, both hallmarks are stamped next to one another on a single lug, rather than a separate lugs.

Launched in 1979 along with its sister reference 16800 in stainless steel, these watches represent a transitional period for Rolex and were the first Submariners to covet a sapphire crystal and quick-set date. Reference 16808 featured a now-collectible 'nipple' dial while its stainless steel sister reference had lume applied directly to the dial. The model was manufactured until approximately 1987.
