Lot Essay

Extremely rare and hard to come by, reference 4099 is one of the rarest early non-Oyster chronographs made by Rolex. These watches were manufactured from approximately 1938 to 1947, with the present lot dating to around the final year of production. This attractive example represents a wonderful opportunity for the astute collector to acquire a piece in today’s growing 'pre-Daytona' market.

Offered only in stainless steel or a combination of gold and stainless steel, these watches are iconic thanks to their ‘spider’ or ‘flared’ lugs and alpha hands, creating a dressy yet distinctive aesthetic. Pleasingly, the present watch retains its original caseback engravings, including the coronet and serial number - features often lost to polishing over time. Even a light service polish can remove these details, making this example’s case notably well-preserved.

The two-register chronograph is powered by a Valjoux 23 movement. The multiscale dial features pointed hour markers, further complemented by luminous alpha hands. It is believed that no more than 100 pieces of this reference were produced, making this an exceptional opportunity for collectors to secure an early Rolex chronograph in today’s expanding 'pre-Daytona' market.
