Lot Essay

This picture is a copy after Jacques des Rousseaux's painting sold Christie's, New York, 20 May 2025, lot 5. Although little is known of the artist's early life, he is thought to have spent time in the studio of Rembrandt van Rijn, whose influence is apparent in the composition and palette.
