The composition derives from a lost painting by Jan Gossaert, the so-called ‘Madonna with the Entangled Child’ (see M.J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, VIII: Jan Gossart and Bernart van Orley, New York and Washington, 1972, p. 95, no. 38).
