Lot Essay

The present drawing reproduces in reverse a composition by Parmigianino in the Städel Museum, Frankfurt (inv. 402; see A. Gnann, Parmigianino. Die Zeichnungen, Petersberg, 2007, II, no. 660, ill.). Parmigianino’s invention was translated into a woodcut by Niccolò Vicentino (see Illustrated Bartsch, XII, no. 30.3) and it is also known through an engraving by Nicolas Beatrizet in the British Museum, London (inv. W,1.43).
