Lot Essay

The present composition is derived from Rembrandt's etching and engraving The Raising of Lazarus: The Larger Plate, dated to circa 1632 (fig. 1; New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art, inv. no. 17.37.194). Dendrochronological analysis of the oak panel provides the earliest felling date of circa 1633, with a probable usage date from 1635 to 1641 onwards (report by Prof. Dr. Peter Klein, 12 August 2024, available upon request).
